Petals in Progress: Practicing the Easel Sympathy Piece

This week’s focus was practice — learning how to build a sympathy easel arrangement. These designs carry deep meaning, often created for tender moments of remembrance, and I wanted to approach this piece with both care and curiosity.

Using red roses, white carnations, and baby’s breath, I practiced creating balance and structure against a backdrop of lush greenery. At first, it felt overwhelming — working with foam, shaping the greens, and layering the flowers until everything felt steady and full. But practice is about progress, not perfection.

Lessons Learned:

  • Mechanics matter — without a secure base, nothing else holds.

  • Restraint is powerful — a few blooms, chosen with care, speak volumes.

  • Even practice pieces can carry meaning, reminding me why I’m here: to keep learning, one design at a time.

Next, I’ll be moving into Bespoke Garden Style using Floral Netting Compote and Contemporary Linear Design — two very different styles that will challenge me in new ways. I can’t wait to share how they unfold in my journey.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4
